I paint landscapes and still life flower arrangements in acrylics with brush, palette knife and sometimes collage on board and paper. I take inspiration from small pen sketches when out walking and in my garden. I try and draw most days in pen and pro marker felt pens the seasons of flowers picked from my own garden. As a keen gardener I like to place them in my collection of vases that I arrange on my kitchen table to observe at close hand.
I enjoy the challenge of mark making that can suggest images in the eye of the viewer. The creative process when making a picture that is interesting in colour and composition as well as subject matter is one I find endlessly absorbing. I also like to experiment with different printmaking approaches, often of the same drawing.
My influences include the paintings of Winifred Nicholson, Matisse, Cezanne, Munch and Van Gogh. They are all artists who use colour and marks to express feelings. Mabel Royds, Elizabeth Blackadder, and David Hockney are all artists whose work challenge me to try different approaches to my art.
