I was born, grew up and received my initial Art and Design Degree and Teacher Training, with Distinctions, in South Africa.
Whilst a student, I received numerous awards, including medals as ‘exceptional first-year student’,’best student in college’, and four merit bursaries.
I started working on freelance projects, whilst still at college, and won a national competition to paint murals at the new Wool Exchange building, I painted murals for St.Michael’s Church, stage sets for the Little Theatre, and won ‘best in show’ for an exhibition trade stand, all in my home town of Port Elizabeth.
My teaching career started at a private boys’ Prep School, then at the School of Art , Port Elizabeth, followed by a lectureship at the Free State School of Art and Design, Bloemfontein.
Throughout that time I continued to do freelance commissions, and to exhibit paintings. I worked for the South African government to redesign the Free State Coat of Arms for the Royal College of Heralds. The Shell Oil Company, and British Leyland as a designer, winning another ‘best in show’ for an exhibition at a trade fair.
In 1965 I came to Britain to exhibit my paintings in London, at John Whibley Gallery, and to study at St.Martin’s School of Art and the Courtauld Institute of London University.
My British school teaching career started in London schools, culminating as Head of Department in a large Comprehensive school in the London Borough of Barking.
I taught evening Adult Education art classes, and ‘O’ and ‘A’ Levels, also in the evenings, whilst working in the schools during the day.
In 1971 I started as a full-time lecturer in Art and Art History at Havering College. I became Head of Art in 1974.
I moved to the North West in 1980, later to North Wales, and now live in Shropshire .
1980-1982, I became the Head of Art and Design at the then Wirral College of Art, Design and Adult Studies.
In1982, I became Head of the then Cheshire School of Art and Design.
Taking early retirement in 1992 in order to paint full time.
Throughout I have painted and exhibited, in London, throughout Britain, and previously in South Africa. I have work in private collections in Britain, America, Europe, as well as South Africa.
In 2022 Shropshire Museums and Art Gallery acquired a painting for their Permanent Collection.
